The Integrity Commission has announced the filing of a legal complaint against a member of the Iraqi Parliament in connection with an extortion case involving a real estate project owner. The complaint alleges the MP demanded financial and material benefits in exchange for intervening in official procedures related to the project.
In a statement, the Commission explained that it exercised its legal right and duty to file the complaint after receiving information about a case under judicial review concerning the extortion of a housing project owner. The project owner was reportedly asked to register 40% of the project in favor of an employee of the accused, along with a demand for $500,000.
The complaint arises from the accused’s interference in official procedures without any legal authority or capacity, claiming to possess relationships and influence with official bodies, including the Commission itself.
The Commission emphasized that all actions taken are part of a legitimate judicial investigation, and the determination of facts and responsibilities remains solely within the jurisdiction of the judiciary, in accordance with the principle of the rule of law and constitutional guarantees.
Furthermore, the Integrity Commission urged careful consideration of cases under judicial review, warning against any false claims regarding its involvement or the misuse of its name to influence judicial or administrative procedures.
